Cameras Become Standard in Swift Trucks


Swift Transportation, Inc. will be installing forward-facing and driver-facing cameras in its trucks. The camera system in each truck will record and upload video clips that capture before and after events like hard braking and swerving.

Swift Transportation, Inc., based in Phoenix Arizona, is the third largest motor carrier in the United States and the largest truckload carrier. The company, which owns over 6,000 company owned tractors, will be installing the Lytx DriveCam system in all of its company owned big rigs.

Swift notified its drivers by video in April 2015. The video which featured Swift President and CEO Richard Stocking said that the company intended to use the video systems as “an in-cab coach.”

The Lytx DriveCam system will upload recordings of safety critical events and the 10 seconds before and after the event. Stocking also noted that the video will help drivers and the carrier avoid blame for crashes that are not their fault.

Implementation of the system in Swift trucks will begin in May of 2015 and be completed by the end of 2016. The company intends to begin with the company’s dedicated dry, central dedicated and refrigerated dedicated transportation lines.

According the company website, the Lytx DriveCam Program, “helps transportation companies be safer by combining state-of-the-art sensor technology; insightful, actionable predictive analytics; and world-class service.” Lytx, Inc. is based in San Diego, California.
