UFED is written by Cellebrite a privately held company established in 1999 and headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Until recently, the Hannibal MO Police Department had been using software that was made available by the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The MSHP, however, recently changed vendors causing the Hannibal Missouri Police Department to obtain their own cell phone forensics solution.
